I have decided to try to find a Book Reading/Library Tracking service that can be accessed via Widgets on my Webpage, rather than to try to build on to the one I am already using.
The ones I have looked at are:
Bibliophil is free, but got discounted almost immediately becasue it has no means for import.
I think I agree that GoodReads is probably better for my purposes that LibraryThing
GoodReads doesn't take input from a
CueCat
, but It was easy to
"de-claw"
my CueCat, so the output is simple Barcode numbers instead of the encoded version. Also, It is easy to export back and forth to use both if I want to, since both are mostly based on ISBN. Both give Widgets.
The short comings of GoodRead:
- Only a Finish Date for Reading a book. I like to keep a Start Date as well.
- I don't see a way to "Read it again". There is only one Read Date, and one Review. I frequently re-read.
Actually, there is no mechanism in LibraryThing for Read Date at all.
Other Differences:
- GoodReads does Widgets for Facebook and Myspace, LibraryThing does LiveJournal and Flickr.
- GoodReads' Widget is Flash, so it's not as easy to place in all contexts. LibraryThing's Widget renders pretty simple HTML and thumbnails. Works most anywhere. Flash Widget might be a little nicer looking, but Text is very dim and hard to read.
- GoodReads does let you share and compare with other people and especially friends more easily.
My site currently has both Widgets listed on the Righthand side. Let me know which you like better.
